Amniocentesis and placental biopsy trainer

The trainer for ultrasound-guided amniocentesis and placental biopsy, designed for obstetrics and gynecology skills training, simulates a prenatal diagnostic test in which a sample of chorionic villi (placenta) is taken to detect chromosomal abnormalities and other genetic disorders.

Placental biopsy can be performed from the 10th week of pregnancy and can provide valuable information about the child's health and genetic makeup.

The trainer consists of a firm, stable base with a recess for the placenta model and the uterine cavity with fetus, which is filled with fluid during training using a dedicated kit.

Two numbered abdominal wall models are also provided; they can be used separately or combined for use together. For stability, the assembled model is secured with a mounting frame fastened by three screws.

Skills practiced:

• Practicing transabdominal amniocentesis (amniotic fluid sampling) under ultrasound guidance, with visualization and interpretation of the acquired data;
• Determining the location of the placenta;
• The puncture site is chosen according to the location of the placenta and the position of the fetus, away from its head where possible.
• Determining the optimal needle insertion point;
• The needle is inserted at a right angle, slowly and smoothly;
• The clinician performing the puncture feels slight resistance as the needle passes through the aponeurosis and the amniotic membrane, followed by a sensation of give as it enters the amniotic fluid;
• Once amniotic fluid appears in the syringe, the required amount (5–10 ml) is carefully aspirated for testing;
• Chorionic villus (placental) biopsy via the transabdominal approach under ultrasound guidance.
