Diaphragm Simulation Platform for GERD Repair

A diaphragm simulation platform designed for practicing closure of the esophageal hiatus in diaphragmatic hernias.

The reusable platform is a silicone block with mounting points for disposable diaphragmatic hernia inserts and a stomach simulation with the lower third of the esophagus for performing the repair.

Skills trained:

• Spatial orientation using the monitor;
• Laparoscopic instrument handling technique;
• Two-handed work with laparoscopic instruments;
• Safe traction and dissection of organs and tissues;
• Needle positioning in the needle holder;
• Needle manipulation within tissues;
• Identifying the suture site for fundoplication;
• Placing an intracorporeal suture;
• Forming an interrupted suture on an inclined surface;
• Suturing the anterior and posterior walls of the cardia of the stomach;
• Forming a wrap from the wall of the cardia and gastric fundus over a bougie during fundoplication;
• Suturing the diaphragmatic crura to reduce the size of the esophageal hiatus.
