MINI Abscess Drainage Training Pad

The MINI training pad for abscess incision and drainage (14 x 7 cm) allows practicing the identification of subcutaneous fluid collections, elicitation of the fluctuation sign, and the stages of surgical management of this pathology.

The model is a rectangular silicone block.

Inside are 4 irregularly shaped cavities containing a fluid component.

Skills Trained:

• Learning the principles of surgical treatment of superficial soft tissue abscesses;
• Preparing the operative field;
• Local infiltration anesthesia of soft tissues;
• Palpation of a fluid collection;
• Eliciting the fluctuation sign;
• Making the incision over the point of maximum fluctuation while avoiding possible injury to major vessels and nerve trunks;
• The basic rule when opening an abscess is to ensure free outflow of pus, open all pockets, and drain both the main cavity and its pockets.
• If the main incision does not allow evacuation of the contents, an additional incision (counter-incision) is made in the lowest part of the purulent cavity or on the side opposite the main incision;
• Opening the abscess cavity, evacuating the purulent contents, and draining the abscess cavity;
• The surgical wound is left open without sutures and covered with sterile dressings with ointment;
• Different approaches to acute and chronic (cold) abscesses;
• Treatment of a cold abscess involves not only opening the purulent cavity but also removing the formed capsule.
