Mitral Valve Repair and Replacement Trainer

The mitral valve repair trainer allows practice of the key stages of both mitral valve repair and mitral valve replacement.

The trainer is designed for practicing various techniques of mitral valve repair or replacement.

It is easy to handle and can be mounted on any metal surface using magnetic fixation (magnets are built into the trainer).

Skills practiced:

• Handling cardiac surgical instruments;
• Studying mitral valve repair options in mitral insufficiency: resection of part of the posterior leaflet followed by annuloplasty, or annuloplasty alone (reinforcement of the valve annulus with special support rings, or reduction of the annulus diameter with special sutures — De Vega, Batista, and Alfieri repairs);
• Mitral valve replacement with and without preservation of the subvalvular apparatus (demonstration of the technique);
• Excision of the pathologically altered mitral valve and implantation of a valve prosthesis in the mitral position;
• Placement of interrupted U-shaped (mattress) sutures on the mitral valve annulus;
• Passing needles through the sewing cuff of the valve prosthesis;
• Seating and fixing the prosthesis, and tying the placed sutures;
• Practicing optimal suture tightening to reduce the risk of paraprosthetic fistula.
