Pleural Drainage and Decompression Trainer

The drainage and decompression trainer was developed for trainees learning pleural cavity drainage skills for pneumothorax and hydrothorax. The model can operate in either "drainage" mode (draining a hydrothorax) or "decompression" mode (draining a pneumothorax), depending on the position of the switch on the trainer. An airtight seal, created by special silicone inserts, makes it possible to teach physicians the required practical skills.

Skills trained:

• Preparing the operative field;
• Making an incision for pleural puncture or drainage;
• Practicing pleural puncture for pneumothorax using a needle or a thin stylet catheter;
• Correctly identifying the pleural puncture point for pneumothorax — the 2nd intercostal space along the midclavicular line or the 3rd–4th intercostal space along the midaxillary line, at the upper edge of the rib;
• Practicing pleural drainage for pneumothorax and hydrothorax using stylet and trocar techniques;
• Placing a drain over a guidewire (Seldinger technique) or with a clamp;
• Fixing (suturing) the drainage tube to the wound edges;
• Bülau (underwater seal) drainage or connecting the drain to a suction unit;
• Applying an aseptic dressing over the operative field and wound, and sealing the wound.
