Traumatic Wound Trainer with Bleeding Module

Traumatic wound trainer with an attachable bleeding module for practicing general surgical skills.

The model is a three-layer pad with a realistic simulation of a contaminated lacerated wound.

The individual layers are colored differently (matching human tissues):

• Skin;
• Subcutaneous fat tissue;
• Muscle layer.

The wound contains the following elements:

• A broken bone with fragments;
• A tendon;
• A fluid-filled vein;
• Necrotic tissue;
• Foreign bodies.

Skills trained:

• Connection to a blood flow simulation system;
• Performing primary surgical debridement of the wound:
• Preparing the operative field;
• Local anesthesia of the tissues;
• Incision of the wound;
• Exploration of the wound canal;
• Removal of foreign bodies;
• Excision of the wound edges, walls, and floor (removal of necrotic, non-viable, and heavily contaminated tissue);
• Final hemostasis;
• Restoring the integrity of damaged tissues and structures;
• Suturing the wound, with drains left in place if indicated;
• After primary surgical debridement, the wound becomes an incised wound (even edges; no crushed, contaminated, or non-viable tissue), enabling relatively rapid healing by primary intention.
