The trephine biopsy trainer simulates the procedure of collecting bone marrow for examination. This technique provides information about the bone marrow and its capacity to produce blood cells.

Can be used for accreditation.

Trainer body components:

The trephine biopsy trainer represents the lower posterior part of the human torso on a base, with a removable soft insert covering simulated iliac and sacral bones of the pelvis used for practicing the procedure.

Skills trained:

• Palpation of the iliac crest, the posterior superior iliac spines and the sacroiliac joint, and selection of the trephine biopsy site (at the posterior superior spine of the right and/or left ilium, spina iliaca posterior superior);
• Preparing the intervention site with antiseptic solutions;
• Performing layer-by-layer local anesthesia down to the periosteum (demonstration without injecting solution);
• Making a scalpel incision of the skin and subcutaneous tissue approximately 3–5 mm long, extending down to the periosteum;
• Inserting a Jamshidi needle with the obturator stylet locked inside the needle (practicing the intraosseous needle insertion technique);
• Extracting the trephine biopsy specimen from the bone (and from the needle lumen);
• Demonstrating the collection of histological material;
• Applying an aseptic dressing.
